WHAT IS FENG SHUI

Feng Shui, which literally means 'wind' and 'water', is the ancient Chinese art of placement.

Feng Shui has been called the Chinese "Art of Placement," that balances the life energies, or Qi, in a living space. Using simple "cures," it increases the flow of positive Qi and subdues the negative flow. And according to the theory of Feng Shui, harmonizing our personal Qi with the Qi in the environment puts us in harmony with the natural forces of nature and, in turn, results in a healthy, happy and prosperous life.

The basic tenets of this philosophy are quite simple. If positive energy can flow through an environment, then the people residing there will benefit. Just as an acupuncturist or bodyworker charts the energy flow within a person's body and either stimulates points of stagnation or subdues overactive channels, Feng Shui maps the flow through our surroundings and makes adjustments -- with often startling results. When the Qi circulates properly, we experience a feeling of well-being while good health and prosperity are increased in our lives.

Feng Shui is a form of metaphysical science that can almost be fully explained by logic...nothing to do with religion or superstition.

It adopts the principles of balances (Yin and Yang). Humans have for centuries lived within the flow of nature, Feng Shui is based on this.

Undeniably, certain aspects of our lives seem to be controlled by external forces not fully understandable to the layman. The earth's gravity, electromagnetic fields and its surrounding constellations all place some form of emphasis on our actions. FENG SHUI enables us to understand this aspect and tap or tune into a person's beneficial cycle or position, thereby enabling a person to be in tune with his environment rather than against it.

Chi is the Chinese word for the natural energy that Feng Shui acts upon. Sheng Chi is the positive force, referred to as the dragon's cosmic breath, while Sha Chi, the negative force, is the "killing breath" or "poison arrows." Using Feng Shui, we maximize the effects of good chi and minimize those of bad chi.

Feng Shui begins with the placement and design of buildings and extends to even minute details within the physical setting. The position and angle of doors; the location of the stove; the direction of the beds; the colour scheme; we can adjust all of these to enhance positive chi, which in turn contributes to our health, prosperity and happiness. We also use the five elements -- water, wood, fire, earth and metal--to create a successful Feng Shui living or working environment.

Effective Feng Shui cannot be had "ready-made." The best results require a highly personal approach. Authentic Feng Shui requires recommendations specifically tailored to each person based on the date and time of birth and other information. Good practitioners use a blend of techniques drawn from the various Feng Shui schools and based on experience and the purest traditions of this ancient philosophy.
